Paul Caneiro has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2018 killings of his brother, sister-in-law, niece, and nephew in Colts Neck.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office announced the sentencing on May 19 after Caneiro was convicted earlier this year on multiple charges, including four counts of first-degree murder.
Family Found Dead After House Fire
On Nov. 20, 2018, firefighters responding to a burning home discovered the bodies of Keith Caneiro, 50, his wife Jennifer Caneiro, 45, and their two children, 11-year-old Jesse and 8-year-old Sophia.
Authorities said all four victims had been killed before the fire was intentionally set.
Investigators later charged Paul Caneiro in connection with the murders.
Prosecutors Detailed Brutal Attack
According to prosecutors, Paul Caneiro shot his brother, shot and stabbed Jennifer Caneiro, and stabbed the two children before setting the family’s home on fire.
Authorities also said Caneiro later returned to his own home and set it on fire while his family was inside in an attempt to destroy evidence and make it appear that both families were targeted.
Financial Dispute Allegedly Motivated Crimes
Prosecutors said the murders were connected to a financial dispute involving family businesses.
According to court records, Paul and Keith Caneiro jointly operated Square One Consulting and EcoStar Pest Management.
Investigators said Keith Caneiro had sent an email stating money was missing from the business and that he would stop paying Paul until the issue was resolved.
Authorities believe the dispute motivated the killings.
Judge Hands Down Multiple Life Sentences
Marc C. Lemieux sentenced Paul Caneiro to four consecutive life sentences plus an additional 16 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
Raymond Santiago described the crimes as especially brutal, saying the victims were attacked in what should have been the safety of their own home.
Prosecutors said Caneiro first cut power to the house before luring his brother outside and killing him before targeting the remaining family members.
Case Remains One of New Jersey’s Most Shocking Crimes
The killings of the Caneiro family shocked communities across New Jersey and became one of the state’s most disturbing murder cases in recent years. With the sentencing now complete, prosecutors say Paul Caneiro will spend the rest of his life in prison for the deaths of his brother’s family.
