GILGIL, KENYA — Authorities in Kenya have arrested eight students suspected of deliberately starting a deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Senior Secondary School, which killed 16 students and injured nearly 80 others.

Incident Details

The fire occurred around 3:30 a.m. local time on May 28 in Nakuru County. Many students on the top floor of the two-story dormitory were forced to jump to escape, resulting in injuries including broken bones. In total, 123 students were affected, with some requiring hospitalization, according to the Kenya Red Cross.

Arrests and Investigation

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified eight students as persons of interest in connection with the suspected arson. They were arrested and are currently in police custody. Investigators continue to record statements, review CCTV footage, and analyze evidence to determine the sequence of events and motive.
