A tip directs deputies to suspects in a dogfighting investigation, leading to the arrest of a Cane Bay couple

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Anthony Juedell Banks, 48, and Nicole Lasean Boyd, 46, were arrested for allegedly running a dog-fighting operation out of their home in the Meridian neighborhood of Cane Bay, authorities announced.

Investigation and Arrest

Deputies first responded to the couple’s home on April 29 after neighbors reported a foul odor. Conditions inside prompted investigators to obtain a search warrant. Inside, 15 dogs were found confined in crates filled with urine and feces, without access to water. Animal Control removed all dogs from the residence.

Evidence suggested the dogs were being used for fighting. Banks and Boyd were not at home during the initial search but were later located and taken into custody following a tip from a concerned citizen.

Charges and Legal Penalties

The couple faces:

  • 15 counts of ill treatment to animals
  • 6 counts of baiting animal fighting

Dogfighting is a felony under South Carolina’s Animal Fighting and Baiting Act, carrying potential fines of up to $5,000, up to five years in prison, or both.

The investigation remains active.
