A tragic incident in Rennes has left the local community in shock after an 11-year-old boy was found dead near a riverbank. Police have questioned two teenagers in connection with the case. The disturbing details have deeply affected residents, especially as the incident happened in a public area close to homes and a popular city square.
Child Found Near Vilaine River
The young boy’s body was discovered on the bank of the Vilaine River in northwestern France. According to prosecutors, a wet towel had been tied tightly around his neck.
The area where the incident occurred is described as a wooded spot below a bridge crossing the river. It is located only about 10 minutes away from Place du Parlement-de-Bretagne, a well-known historic public square in the city.
Local fishermen often visit the area. In fact, a fisherman reportedly heard a child crying and alerted authorities, although he was unable to find the boy at that time. Shortly afterwards, the child’s body was located.
Emergency services rushed to the scene. Firefighters attempted to save the boy, who was suffering from cardiac and respiratory arrest. Sadly, despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two Teenagers in Custody
Rennes prosecutor Frédéric Teillet confirmed that two teenagers have been detained:
| Suspect | Age | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Boy | 16 | Arrested at home |
| Girl | 15 | Turned herself in |
According to the prosecutor, the two teenagers were seen with the victim on the afternoon of the incident. They are currently in police custody on suspicion of “murder of a minor.”
Authorities also clarified that the victim was 11 years old, correcting earlier reports that stated he was 12.
At this stage, it is not clear how the three minors knew each other or what exactly happened before the tragedy.
Mother Searching for Her Son
French media reported that the boy’s mother had been searching for him while the events were unfolding near the river. The child had reportedly told her that he was going fishing in the area with a friend.
The thought that the young boy left home expecting a normal day and never returned has made the case even more heartbreaking for the community.
Investigation Underway
Police vehicles blocked off the area as divers searched the river for further evidence. The organised and specialised crime division has taken over the investigation.
Officials are now trying to piece together:
- The timeline of events
- The relationship between the minors
- The cause and manner of death
- Whether any additional individuals were involved
Authorities have not yet released further details about the motive or circumstances.
Community in Shock
Residents of Rennes have expressed disbelief over the incident. One local walker said he could not believe that such a young child had died in this way.
The area near the Vilaine River is usually calm, with families, walkers and fishermen spending time outdoors. The tragedy has shaken that sense of safety.
Waiting for Answers
As the investigation continues, many questions remain unanswered. Police are carefully gathering evidence and questioning those involved. Since the suspects are minors, legal procedures will follow specific rules under French law.
This deeply sad case reminds us how vulnerable children are and how quickly situations can turn tragic. For the victim’s family, especially his mother, the loss is unimaginable.
The coming days and weeks will be crucial as authorities work to understand exactly what happened and ensure that justice is served according to the law. For now, the city of Rennes mourns the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
