Summerville residents are raising safety concerns over a busy stretch of Jedburg Road, where hundreds of accidents have occurred in recent years. Many are calling for a traffic light to reduce crashes at dangerous intersections.
Accident Data
According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, 202 collisions have occurred along Jedburg Road between Old Dairy Road and Drop Off Drive over the past five years. These accidents resulted in three deaths and 69 injuries. The intersection at Jedburg Road and Drop Off Drive is particularly hazardous.
Resident Concerns
Longtime resident Bob Irwin urges officials to complete a traffic study and implement solutions, emphasizing the need to prevent further accidents. Tammy Schuckert, who has lived on Jedburg Road since 2014, says she fears driving through the intersection near the Spinx gas station due to frequent crashes and fatalities.
Debbie Kale shared that her son, who works at the Arby’s on Jedburg Road, was involved in an accident at a nearby intersection. Since then, he has had to take longer routes to avoid the dangerous spot.
County Plans
Berkeley County is currently in the second phase of U.S. Highway 176 construction, covering a 2.7-mile stretch from Jedburg Road to Nexton Parkway. The county also has capacity improvement projects along Jedburg Road, including work from County Line to Wildgame Road and from Wildgame Road to U.S. 176.
While a traffic report and analysis are underway, residents hope county officials will prioritize a traffic light at key intersections before more accidents occur.
