A Texas man accused of killing his pregnant wife fled to Italy weeks before his murder trial and is now fighting extradition back to the United States.
Murder Suspect Fled to Italy
Lee Gilley, 39, allegedly cut off his ankle monitor on May 1 and left the U.S. while out on bond.
According to federal investigators, he travelled to Milan using forged Belgian identification documents and a different name before later revealing his true identity to authorities.
Gilley has since requested asylum in Italy.
Wife Found Dead in Houston Home
Gilley was charged in the 2024 death of his wife, Christa Bauer Gilley, who was nine weeks pregnant at the time.
Police said Gilley called 911 in October 2024 claiming his wife had overdosed.
However, a medical examiner later ruled her death a homicide caused by compression to the neck and back.
Prosecutors Point to Marital Problems
Court filings state prosecutors planned to present evidence that Gilley had allegedly been involved in an affair and had posted online about being unhappy in his marriage months before his wife’s death.
Authorities also said the couple argued on the day Christa was found unresponsive after Gilley reportedly bought a new SUV without her approval.
Italy Hearing Held
During a court hearing in Italy, Gilley claimed he was innocent and said he chose Italy because the country opposes the death penalty.
Texas prosecutors have not publicly announced whether they plan to seek the death penalty in the case.
Officials in Texas said they are working with U.S. and Italian authorities to return Gilley to stand trial.
