A woman has been arrested in North Charleston after allegedly robbing a man during a panhandling incident. Police say quick action and surveillance footage helped identify and catch the suspect.
Robbery Reported on Ashley Phosphate Road
The incident took place on Ashley Phosphate Road in North Charleston. According to the North Charleston Police Department, officers responded after a man reported being robbed.
The victim told police that a woman approached him while panhandling and asked for money. When he refused, the situation turned aggressive.
Alleged Incident Details
Police say the woman became upset and reached into the victim’s pocket, taking around $100 before running away from the scene. The victim then contacted authorities, which led to an immediate investigation.
Suspect Identified Through Footage
Officers reviewed surveillance video from the area, which helped identify the suspect as Lakeysha Lassiter, a 43-year-old local resident.
Police said she was known to frequent the Northside Drive area, which helped officers narrow down their search.
Attempt to Avoid Police
While searching nearby, officers spotted a woman matching her description, although she had changed clothes. According to reports, she tried to avoid police by moving between businesses and discarding items she was carrying.
Despite this, officers were able to stop her and bring her into contact with the victim.
Arrest and Charges
The victim positively identified Lassiter as the person who robbed him. She was then taken into custody without further incident.
Lassiter has been charged with strong-armed robbery and was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
