A York County man is facing multiple charges, including hate intimidation, after a shooting at a Myrtle Beach nightclub that caters to the LGBTQ community.
First Charge Under City’s Hate-Crime Ordinance
Authorities say this marks the first case filed under Myrtle Beach’s hate-crime ordinance, which was approved in April 2024. The law allows for additional penalties, including up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine, for crimes determined to be motivated by bias.
City leaders say the ordinance was created to provide a formal mechanism for reporting and prosecuting hate-based incidents.
Shooting Reported at Nightclub
Police responded around 11 a.m. Wednesday to the 2700 block of South Kings Highway following reports of a weapons incident.
The shooting occurred near Pulse Ultra Club, a nightclub known to serve the LGBTQ community. No injuries were reported.
A witness told officers he heard several gunshots before leaving the club. When he returned to his vehicle, he discovered its windows had been shattered.
Surveillance Video and Arrest
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage, which reportedly showed muzzle flashes coming from the passenger side of a silver vehicle stopped in the roadway. One of the bullets struck the building.
Officers later located and stopped a vehicle matching the description. The driver, identified as Timothy James Truett Jr., 37, of Clover, was taken into custody.
According to arrest warrants, police found a firearm and spent shell casings inside the vehicle.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Truett is facing multiple charges, including hate intimidation, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, discharging a firearm into a dwelling, discharging a firearm within city limits, and damaging property.
He appeared in Myrtle Beach Municipal Court, where his bond was set at more than $313,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 5.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
Community leaders expressed concern over the incident, particularly given that it occurred in broad daylight.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Myrtle Beach police.
