BCSO arrests Oxford House treasurer in $2.8K embezzlement charge

A case of financial misconduct in Berkeley County has raised concerns about trust and accountability within recovery homes. Authorities say the incident involves misuse of funds by someone in a key position of responsibility.

Treasurer Arrested in Financial Misconduct Case

In Berkeley County, a 63-year-old Goose Creek resident, Brenda Carol Byrd, has been arrested following an investigation by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. She is facing serious felony charges, including breach of trust with fraudulent intent and forgery.

Officials say the case involves financial misconduct at a recovery residence where Byrd was serving as treasurer.

Investigation Began After Missing Checks Reported

The investigation started on March 17 when deputies were called to an Oxford House in Goose Creek after reports of missing checks and check stubs. During their inquiry, detectives found that Byrd lived at the home and was part of a recovery program.

Because of her role as treasurer, she had access to the organisation’s checkbook, which was kept in a locked filing cabinet.

Nine Forged Checks Allegedly Used

According to investigators, Byrd allegedly forged nine checks and made them payable to herself. These checks were then cashed, leading to a total loss of $2,800.72 over a period from February to March.

Authorities say the checks were taken from the secured checkbook, indicating a breach of trust within the organisation.

About the Recovery Home

The Oxford House in Goose Creek is a sober living facility designed to support people recovering from addiction. Residents live together in a structured, substance-free environment where they share responsibilities and help each other stay on track.

Such homes depend heavily on trust and cooperation, making cases like this particularly serious.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

After collecting evidence, deputies issued two felony warrants against Byrd. She was then taken into custody.

The sheriff’s office also stated that its white-collar crime investigators are continuing their efforts to protect local organisations from fraud and financial misuse.
