Mount Pleasant, S.C. — Two people were injured early Tuesday morning following a drunk driving crash near Patriots Point, according to the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

Police said the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. at 85 Patriots Point, where officers responded to a reported collision.

At the scene, officers found a woman receiving medical care from EMS for her injuries. A man was also present near a truck that had crashed into a tree.

Driver Arrested on Felony DUI Charge

Police identified the driver as Colin Mckenzie. He was arrested and charged with felony DUI causing great bodily injury.

According to the police report, Mckenzie refused medical assistance at the scene. Officers noted that he appeared sluggish and disoriented during questioning.

Authorities said he refused to perform field sobriety tests multiple times and seemed “glazed” or out of it. While being escorted to a patrol vehicle, he reportedly stumbled and had to be supported by officers.

Police also reported a strong smell of alcohol on his breath.

Blood Test Ordered After Refusal

Mckenzie was taken to the Mount Pleasant Police Department, where he again refused to provide a breath sample.

Due to his refusal, officers obtained a search warrant approved by a judge to conduct a blood draw.

Meanwhile, the injured woman was taken to MUSC for treatment of serious injuries.
