Mount Pleasant, S.C. — A boat rental operator in the Shem Creek area is waiting for answers after two suspects allegedly stole a boat for a late-night ride and later returned it in damaged condition.
The incident happened on March 15 at Shem Creek Boat Rentals. According to the operator, security cameras captured the suspects breaking into the office and taking keys before selecting a boat.
Walker Townsend, who runs the rental business, said the suspects searched through keys to find the right one for the boat they wanted to take.
Boats Damaged, Repairs Could Cost Thousands
Police reports from the Mount Pleasant Police Department say multiple boats were damaged during the incident.
Townsend explained that two boats were affected. One boat has serious damage and cannot be used anymore, while another will need costly repairs.
He said the larger boat may cost up to $10,000 to repair. The second boat, an inflatable Zodiac, has a hole and is no longer usable.
“They damaged the side and back of the boat, likely from hitting oyster beds,” Townsend said, describing visible scuffs and structural damage.
Operator Waiting for Police Update
Townsend said he reported the incident to the Mount Pleasant Police Department last week and also shared camera footage with them.
However, he says he has not received any updates so far.
“I gave them the footage and timing from my cameras, but since then, I haven’t heard anything,” Townsend said.
He also mentioned that there should be some form of accountability for the damage caused.
