A notice of intent to sue has been filed against Charleston County Detention Center’s medical provider, VitalCore, over the death of inmate Mary Brucato. The 23-year-old died on August 11 at Al Cannon Detention Center, ruled a homicide due to medical neglect by the coroner.
Legal Action Details
The filing on March 13 targets VitalCore, its Chief Medical Officer Harbans Deol, and potential John Does for failing to monitor Brucato’s detox withdrawal, provide proper prescriptions, or respond to her visible distress like vomiting outside her cell. Despite her audible pleas for help, no assessment occurred, leading to claims of deliberate indifference and systemic failures.
Family’s Position
Attorney Mark Peper, representing Brucato’s family, aims to hold VitalCore accountable and secure answers on the lapses in care while awaiting SLED’s investigation. If no response comes within 120 days, a full lawsuit will proceed against VitalCore and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
