All victims were affiliated with the university, shot inside a classroom, with classes canceled for the day and the area secured by noon.​

University alerts activated “run-hide-fight” protocols around 10:47-10:49 a.m. after 911 calls reported gunfire in the business school building. Norfolk Police confirmed an active incident by 11:11 a.m., and the shooter was neutralized by 11:30 a.m., with an all-clear issued shortly after.
