Joseph R. “Joe” Pye, retired superintendent of Dorchester School District Two in South Carolina, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026, after a 52-year career transforming public education in the district.

Career Highlights

Pye began teaching in 1970, progressing through roles like principal at Flowertown Elementary (where he earned Palmetto’s Finest recognition), personnel director, deputy superintendent, and superintendent from 1999 to 2022. He oversaw 28 major projects, including 11 new schools, for a district serving over 26,000 students.

Awards and Legacy

Honored as South Carolina Superintendent of the Year (2012), Citadel Wall of Fame inductee (2013), and namesake of Joseph R. Pye Elementary School, he championed parent involvement via PTA leadership. A scholarship in his name supports future educators, and district leaders praised his relationship-building and student focus.

Services

Visitation is Sunday, March 15, at Summerville Baptist Church (1-2:30 p.m.), followed by a 2:30 p.m. service and burial at Carolina Memorial Gardens; donations go to the church or his legacy scholarship.
