A 30-year-old man in Texas is accused of killing a woman’s unborn child after allegedly running a red light while drinking and driving, crashing into the pregnant woman’s car, and forcing her into early labor. Alexander Diaz Mendoza was taken into custody and charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Details of the Crash and Investigation
The incident occurred on the night of Thursday, Feb. 19, at the intersection of Woodlake Parkway and Binz-Engleman Road in San Antonio. Mendoza allegedly disregarded a red light, colliding with the pregnant woman’s car, which caused her to go into premature labor, resulting in a miscarriage. Investigators are awaiting the results of an alcohol test to determine if Mendoza’s blood alcohol level exceeds the legal limit, which could lead to an additional charge of intoxication manslaughter.
Mendoza’s Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Mendoza, a civilian employee at a nearby military base, was arrested on Tuesday after authorities obtained a warrant for his involvement in the crash. At the scene, Mendoza appeared intoxicated, with bloodshot eyes, a strong smell of alcohol, and slurred speech. An open beer bottle was found inside his vehicle. He is currently being held on a $125,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 5.
