Jermaine Richard Heyward, a 51-year-old Georgia man, was arrested by North Charleston Police on January 9, 2026, following a high-speed chase that ended in a crash injuring two people.​
Incident Details
The pursuit began around 5:45 p.m. when an officer spotted Heyward driving the wrong way on Buchanan Street. He fled the traffic stop on Arbutus Avenue, ran two stop signs, weaved into oncoming traffic, and attempted to run a red light at Rivers and McMillan Avenues, striking another vehicle.​
Crash Aftermath
The collision caused the other vehicle, carrying an adult and a child, to lose control and hit a curb near a McDonald’s, resulting in minor injuries requiring hospital treatment. Heyward abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot into the parking lot but was quickly apprehended by officers.​
Charges and Detention
Heyward faces charges of failure to stop for blue lights, hit and run with personal injury, reckless driving, and vehicle abandonment. He was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.​
