IAAM begins "The Renewal Series" with activities in the upcoming year.

The International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston launches “The Renewal Series” this winter, a new annual program fostering communal healing, reflection, and forward-looking hope rooted in African Diaspora traditions. It ties into key observances like Kwanzaa, Watch Night, Emancipation Day, and MLK Day through community events from late December 2025 to mid-January 2026.

Program Schedule

  • December 31, 2025: Freedom’s Eve Midday Watch Service (12-1:30 p.m.) at Morris Brown AME Church, partnering with Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor for vigilance, faith, and liberation rituals.
  • January 1, 2026: Emancipation Day Celebration (12-5 p.m.) at IAAM, following Burke High School parade; free admission, workshops, family activities exploring emancipation stories.
  • January 19, 2026: IAAM KING MLK Day event (12-5 p.m.) at IAAM, post-YWCA parade; free entry with youth activities, reflections on Dr. King’s legacy of justice.

Cultural Focus

IAAM Chief Learning Officer Malika N. Pryor emphasizes honoring the past to shape the future, blending reflection, joy, and commitment to community. These gatherings invite shared purpose amid Charleston’s rich Gullah Geechee heritage, complementing local NYE festivities with deeper historical resonance. Plan ahead for free IAAM access during parades.
