The 18th annual Chanukah in the Square event takes place today, Sunday, December 14, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Marion Square in Charleston, South Carolina. This free, family-friendly gathering organized by the Lowcountry’s Jewish community, including Chabad of Charleston and the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston, celebrates the Festival of Lights.
Event Highlights
Attendees enjoy live music, children’s entertainment, crafts, and giveaways tailored for kids. Food options include traditional hot latkes, donuts, hot pretzels, hot dogs, burgers, kettle corn, chicken soup, soft drinks, and other Chanukah treats. The highlight is the community lighting of a giant menorah at dusk.
Historical Context
Chanukah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 164 B.C.E., as detailed in the Books of the Maccabees. The holiday centers on the miracle of a single flask of pure oil lasting eight days in the menorah, symbolizing faith and resilience. Families worldwide light the menorah nightly, share meals, and play games like dreidel during this eight-day observance.
