Joan McKissick, wife of legendary Summerville High School football coach John McKissick, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday night at age 94. She had supported her husband’s remarkable 63-year career from 1952 to 2015, which included 621 wins and 10 state championships, by meticulously documenting it through scrapbooks and clippings.​​
Community Legacy
Summerville football honored her as a pillar of the community, noting her roles in organizing banquets, parent nights, hall of fames, and serving on the Dorchester District Two school board. Her kindness and passion touched generations, with the school expressing condolences to the McKissick family.​
Lasting Memorial
A statue of Joan and John was unveiled in 2022 at Memorial Stadium, which she described as a reminder of their shared good times. John had passed in November 2019, and Joan expressed enduring gratitude for his fulfilling career despite the challenges.
