Lowcountry commuters experience significant delays on Wednesday morning due to icy roads and thick fog.

Icy conditions from freezing fog caused major disruptions on Lowcountry bridges and roads Wednesday morning, including full closures of the Cosgrove Bridge and westbound Don Holt Bridge due to multi-vehicle crashes. Eastbound I-526 near Virginia Ave. was also blocked, leading to extreme delays like 106-minute commutes from West Ashley to Mount Pleasant.

Weather Alerts

A freezing fog advisory lasted until 9 a.m. for Charleston and tidal Berkeley counties, with black ice reported on bridges. North Charleston Police noted dense fog and icy surfaces across the area.

Current Status

Both the Don Holt and Cosgrove Bridges have since reopened, though slow traffic persists. No active road closures appear in Charleston GIS reports today. Drivers should exercise caution, allow extra time, and monitor updates.
