A charity in the Lowcountry is asking destruction in order to expand its housing services.

Star Gospel Mission in Charleston, S.C., is advancing its Brighter Together Campaign to expand transitional housing for homeless men, women, and children. The organization broke ground on phase one for women and children, aiming to add 30 new beds initially through remodeling and new construction.

Expansion Phases

Phase one focuses on creating stable housing for vulnerable families via the Morning Light program, promoting long-term self-sufficiency. A later phase involves demolishing the downtown main campus—currently holding 18 of 31 men’s beds—and rebuilding it as a four-story facility with administration, programs, and 75 total beds for men.

Program Details

Men enter the Pathways program for stability, while mothers and children join Morning Light for support services. Executive Director Rev. Dr. Marion Platt emphasized the rebuild’s role in scaling services amid rising homelessness in the Lowcountry. The City of Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review is reviewing the demolition soon.
