Officials claim that the fatal Wadmalaw Island fire was caused by portable heaters

St. Johns Fire District investigators determined that a fatal house fire on Wadmalaw Island was caused by portable heaters.

Fire Details

Crews responded around 4:30 a.m. Sunday to the 6600 block of Maybank Highway after passersby reported heavy flames venting through the roof of a home. Firefighters later discovered one deceased person inside the structure during overhaul operations.

Cause and Victim

The blaze originated from improper use of portable heaters, as confirmed through a joint probe with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has not released the victim’s identity publicly.

Safety Recommendations

Officials advise keeping heaters at least 3 feet from combustibles, using them only in well-ventilated spaces, never leaving them unattended, and ensuring proper maintenance without leaks. The district offers free smoke alarm installation; call 843-559-9194 for help.
