Charleston County School District provides free resources to homeless families

The Charleston County School District partners with the Community Resource Center to offer monthly shopping events providing free essentials like clothing, diapers, school supplies, groceries, and healthcare items to about 60 homeless families under the McKinney-Vento Act.

Program Goals

The initiative aims to reduce stress for displaced families, allowing children to prioritize education over basic needs, especially during holidays. Parent advocate Abria Pryor noted that community partnerships help meet various family requirements beyond schooling.

Event Details

Events occur monthly from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Community Resource Center on Whipper Barony Lane, with the next planned for January. Executive director Louis Smith highlighted support including hygiene products, work clothes, and counselor assistance for navigating social services. Families can contact the district’s McKinney-Vento office for referrals.
