Charleston, South Carolina – Two Lowcountry non-profits are partnering to help those in Jamaica who are still affected by Category 5 Hurricane Melissa.
The Livity Foundation collaborates with The Water Mission to deliver this water. The Water Mission dispatched teams to Jamaica prior to the hurricane to provide aid.
Some of the water supply was contaminated as a result of the storm, but by working together, both organizations can tap into water sources such as the Martha Brae River and purify it for residents.
David Brisacher, the founder of The Livity Foundation, says that they are currently able to supply approximately 10,000 gallons of clean drinking water every day.
What they had to do was load up on trucks, drive miles and miles out, fill up bottles, and return, which was a very difficult circumstance,” Brisacher recalled. “People, when they go to Jamaica, they normally only see Montigo Bay or the popular tourist destinations, and don’t realize how big the rural communities are, and how hard those communities, that are already limited in resources, got hit.”
Brisacher is friends with Ky-Mani Marley, Bob Marley’s son. They have organized various local activities to raise donations and help individuals in the neighborhood. On Sunday, November 30, Brisacher will present a reggae fundraiser event at the Charleston Pour House.
