Charleston, South Carolina – A part of King Street is closed until further notice as contractors prepare to destroy a building in danger of collapsing.

On Friday, crews raced to 1001 King Street after an apparently abandoned structure partially collapsed.

Following an inspection, it was found that the structure was in imminent danger of collapsing.

Charleston city officials have announced that King Street between Grove Street and Francis Street will be blocked to all automobile and pedestrian traffic until further notice.

“This closure is necessary to protect public safety, as the building’s front wall is unstable and could potentially collapse into the street,” according to municipality officials.

Barricades and fencing have been built to control access to the area. People should avoid the surrounding region.

The street will be closed until the demolition is completed and engineers determine that it is safe to reopen.
