North Charleston, South Carolina. Two males were detained Monday following a chase with deputies that resulted in the finding of a modified handgun, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Paeton Martin and Braxton Brown were detained and charged with unlawful possession of a machine gun.

According to the incident report, deputies were patrolling Ingleside Boulevard near Weber Road when they noticed two automobiles participating in what they described as street racing. Deputies then attempted to pull over one of the vehicles involved, a blue Nissan Altima, and while the suspect’s vehicle reportedly came to a stop, deputies witnessed the driver and front seat passenger changing seats before fleeing the area.

Deputies pursued the car, noting that its highest speed was 130 miles per hour. The chase stopped on Windsor Hill Boulevard when the car vaulted a curb and became inoperable.

Four of the vehicle’s occupants escaped on foot, and Brown was the first to be arrested. K-9 police were dispatched to search the area, but their efforts were unsuccessful. A second passenger, identified as Paeton Martin, later returned to the site and surrendered to police.

According to deputies, a search of Martin yielded two guns, one of which had been converted to function as a “machine gun” capable of firing more than one shot per pull of the trigger. He was detained by law officials and sent to the Al Cannon Detention Center.

The remaining occupants of the vehicle evaded capture, and more charges are pending the identification of the driver.
