Charleston, South Carolina – The Charleston Animal Society claims to take in more than 90% of all animals in Charleston and Berkeley Counties.
With 1,300 animals in its care across both campuses, the Charleston Animal Society says it is adopting emergency measures to combat the growing impact of the national veterinarian shortage.
From Sunday to Wednesday, the Animal Society will welcome an emergency veterinary surgery team from out of state to assist with a large-scale spay and neuter initiative. The goal is to give 550 surgeries for animals to move on to adoption in accordance with South Carolina state legislation.
Officials say shelters across the country, especially in the Lowcountry, are dealing with growing backlogs of animals awaiting surgery before being adopted.
According to the Charleston Animal Society, the hundreds of animals who undergo surgery will be instantly ready for adoption.
