North Charleston delivers sandbags ahead of expected severe rains and flooding

North Charleston, South Carolina – The City of North Charleston is assisting residents in preparing for potential tropical storm impacts. On Saturday morning, city staff distributed free sandbags throughout North Charleston.

Each of the three North Charleston locations distributed 2,500 sandbags beginning at 11 a.m., while supplies last. At Gussie Greene Community Center, North Charleston Recreation Department employees loaded up to six sandbags into the trunks of vehicles parked along the road.

“We are just doing this community service to serve the people in our community,” said North Charleston Recreation Director Kathy Kackley. “This site is all the Recreation Department; the other departments are going around and delivering sandbags on trailers today to some of the low-lying areas to people that couldn’t get out.”

The North Charleston Athletic Center and North Charleston Aquatic Center were the two other locations where people could get free supplies by showing proof of residency and their ID.

Kackley stated that the city’s public service was to assist residents in preparing for the possibility of heavy rainfall and flooding in the Lowcountry early this week. She added that citizens should not wait until Monday and should prepare ahead of time, as officials predict the most significant impact.

“We want everyone to be safe, and we want them to look out for people in low-lying areas. “Start checking on them to see what they need and if you can assist them,” Kackley said.

City officials urge residents to keep the sandbags for future use. For more information on storm preparation and North Charleston city operations during storms, visit the city’s’storm alert’ page on their website.
