Moncks Corner, South Carolina. A Moncks Corner man was detained Sunday for a series of incidents on Folly Beach and is now facing more than a dozen counts.
According to the City of Folly Beach, Justin Kyle Mack Wright, 32, is accused of carjacking a vehicle at gunpoint before escaping authorities.
Officers were alerted at 2:15 p.m. to be on the lookout for a stolen car from Ladson, according to Folly Beach Public Safety. About 15 minutes later, a 911 caller reported that a suspect had shot a gun into the air and taken a silver Chevrolet Silverado from East Cooper Avenue.
A minute later, cops saw the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The motorist, identified as Wright, fled, colliding with a Folly Beach police truck. He then accelerated along East Ashley Avenue, smashing the fence at Lighthouse Inlet.
The stolen vehicle became stuck in the sand, and Wright fled on foot. Officers pursued with loud verbal demands, but Wright turned and fired at least two bullets.
Wright was eventually discovered hiding in nearby dunes and captured.
His accusations include attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, armed carjacking, hit-and-run, felon in possession of a firearm, and failing to stop for blue lights.
The agency described Wright as a career criminal with a lengthy arrest record.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office aided Folly Beach Public Safety in apprehending Wright.
“The bravery shown by our officers under direct gunfire ensured our community remained safe during a very dangerous and fast-moving situation,” according to Chief Gilreath.
