An elderly woman’s life was saved on Tuesday after she went into cardiac arrest while swimming in a pool on Johns Island, South Carolina. The quick actions of local responders helped resuscitate the woman and get her the medical attention she needed.
The Emergency Response
The incident occurred on Stono View Road around 2 p.m. when the woman was found unresponsive in the pool. First responders from the St. John’s Fire District, St. Andrew’s Fire Department, and Charleston County EMS arrived at the scene promptly.
Assistant Fire Chief Nathan Prouse of St. John’s Fire District took immediate action by jumping over a fence to reach the pool area. There, the woman’s husband was holding her head above the water. Without wasting time, Asst. Chief Prouse quickly removed the woman from the pool and began performing CPR while waiting for additional help to arrive.
The Resuscitation Effort
Thanks to the timely CPR performed by Asst. Chief Prouse, the woman regained spontaneous circulation (ROSC), meaning her heart started beating again on its own. This crucial moment helped stabilize her condition.
She was then transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where she is receiving further treatment. The quick and skilled response of the emergency teams likely played a key role in saving the woman’s life.
