A serious incident in North Charleston has led to the arrest of a teenager after an alleged home break-in and assault early Sunday morning. Police acted quickly after receiving an emergency call from the area.
What Happened in the Incident?
According to the North Charleston Police Department, officers were dispatched around 5 a.m. to the 5700 block of Dundrum Street following a report of a possible sexual assault.
While heading to the location, officers spotted a man matching the suspect’s description crossing the street. When told to stop, he reportedly ran toward a nearby playground. After a short chase, police were able to catch and detain him.
Who Was Arrested?
The suspect was identified as Sergio Perez, an 18-year-old resident of North Charleston.
He has been charged with:
- First-degree burglary
- First-degree assault and battery
He was later taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center for booking.
Victim’s Statement
Police spoke with the victim, who shared details of the incident. She said she and her sister were asleep in the same bedroom when she suddenly woke up and saw the suspect at her window.
According to her statement:
- The suspect was leaning through the window
- He allegedly reached under her clothing
- She screamed and told him to leave
After this, the suspect reportedly fled through the same window.
Evidence and Identification
Authorities said that footage from the area shows the suspect approaching the window and then running away. The victim and her sister also recognised him, as he was known to them, which helped police confirm his identity.
