CHARLESTON, S.C. — Ten teenage suspects have been charged following a series of vehicle break-ins in downtown Charleston, the Charleston Police Department (CPD) announced Monday.
Investigation into Vehicle Break-Ins
The investigation began in March when officers were alerted to groups of teens breaking into cars in downtown Charleston. The suspects, whose ages range from 11 to 15 years old, face a total of 22 charges related to the thefts. Over the course of several weeks, the teens allegedly entered unlocked vehicles, stealing cash, credit cards, and three firearms.
Charges and Arrests
Each of the juveniles involved has been charged with Theft from a Motor Vehicle. Some suspects have also received additional charges related to Financial Transaction Card Theft and Fraud. The stolen firearms have raised additional concerns, as the crime spree targeted mostly unsecured cars.
Community Assistance and Safety Reminders
CPD expressed gratitude to the community for providing video evidence and reporting suspicious activity, which played a crucial role in advancing the investigation. The department is reminding residents to lock their vehicles, remove firearms, and continue to report any suspicious activity to help prevent further crimes.
This case highlights the importance of community involvement in addressing crime and ensuring public safety.
