CHARLOTTE, NC — Christopher Aaron Murray, 40, of Cary, was arrested at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on charges related to a financial fraud scheme targeting a Jones County family, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
Scam Details
The investigation began on March 18, 2024, when the Jones County Sheriff’s Office requested SBI assistance after the suspect, Murray, contacted a family and falsely claimed that their bank account had been compromised. He then demanded immediate payment from the victims, using a tactic commonly seen in financial fraud schemes.
Charges and Arrest
Following a month-long investigation, agents arrested Murray on charges including felony conspiracy, felony obtaining property by false pretenses, felony exploitation of a disabled or elderly person, and impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Murray was taken into custody by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police at the airport and was transported to the Mecklenburg County Detention Center. His first court appearance is scheduled for tomorrow.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone who may have been targeted to contact the Jones County Sheriff’s Office or the SBI’s Coastal District office. The investigation is ongoing.
