A concerning incident in North Charleston has raised serious safety questions after police found a child inside a vehicle during a short pursuit. Authorities say the situation involved drugs, a firearm, and reckless behaviour.
What Happened During the Incident?
According to police, officers first noticed a vehicle with illegal window tint near Spruill Avenue and McMillan Avenue. When they began to follow the car, the driver made an illegal turn and then briefly tried to flee.
The chase did not last long. The vehicle eventually pulled into a nearby gas station, where officers were able to stop it without any further trouble.
Child and Weapon Found in Vehicle
When officers approached the car, they made a troubling discovery. A small child was sitting in the front passenger seat, which raised immediate safety concerns.
Police also found a handgun inside the vehicle, placed in the centre console. This added to the seriousness of the situation, especially considering the presence of the child.
Drugs Recovered from the Scene
After stopping the vehicle, officers went back along the route taken during the chase. They found plastic bags containing suspected marijuana that had been thrown from the vehicle.
Authorities said:
- The total amount recovered was more than 100 grams
- Surveillance footage showed the driver discarding the bags
- Additional material was found near where the vehicle stopped
Who Was Arrested?
The driver was identified as Robert Burnett White II, a 29-year-old man from Goose Creek.
He was taken into custody without incident and transported to a local detention centre.
Charges Filed
Police have charged White with multiple offences, including possession with intent to distribute marijuana, failure to stop for police signals, child endangerment, and littering.
These charges reflect both the alleged criminal activity and the risk posed to the child during the incident.
