50+ paddling pros rehearse rescues to prevent fatal kayak disasters before summer rush

More than 50 paddling safety experts from across the country are in Charleston this week for a national training event focused on preventing kayak accidents ahead of the summer season.

National Kayak Safety Training Held in Charleston

The training is taking place at James Island County Park, where instructors, park rangers, and rescue teams are practicing emergency water rescues and kayak recovery techniques.

Organizers said the event includes real-life rescue scenarios such as overturned kayaks and emergency response drills.

South Carolina Sees Ongoing Kayak Accidents

According to state data, South Carolina has recorded nearly 30 kayak-related accidents since 2020, including 15 fatal incidents.

Safety experts said many deadly accidents happen in calm water conditions and often involve beginner paddlers with little experience.

Experts Stress Importance of Life Jackets

Organizers said most paddling deaths are preventable with proper safety training and life jacket use.

Experts shared national statistics showing that 87% of people involved in serious paddling accidents were not wearing life jackets.

They also noted that most fatal accidents involve people with very limited paddling experience.

Charleston Chosen for Training Location

Officials said Charleston was selected for the training because of its variety of waterways and access to different water conditions for rescue practice.

The event runs through Friday and comes ahead of National Safe Boating Week later this month.
