Anabell Correa, 22, has been charged with two counts of murder after a March 2026 crash allegedly killed Desiree and Max Mooney in Bakersfield, California.

Details of the Crash

According to court documents obtained by Bakersfield Now, Correa admitted to police that she had been drinking, saying, “I drank one Twisted Tea bro.” She was traveling eastbound on Stockdale Highway when she allegedly failed to stop at a red light and struck the Mooneys’ ride-share vehicle.

The couple were returning home after celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day. Their friend, Tayler Wells, survived but sustained severe injuries, including broken bones and dental trauma. The ride-share driver suffered a fractured neck and bleeding on the brain. Desiree Mooney had turned 30 just months before the crash.

Legal Proceedings

In February 2026, a Kern County judge ruled there was sufficient evidence to charge Correa in connection with the crash. Correa, who was allegedly driving without a license and had a blood alcohol level of 0.088% (above the legal limit of 0.080%), faces 10 charges, including two counts of murder.

She has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges and remains in custody without bail. Her trial is scheduled for late August 2026.

Correa’s defense attorney has argued she should face manslaughter charges instead, citing her lack of prior criminal history. However, police have presented statements she made acknowledging the dangers of drunk driving.

Court Tensions

The case has already seen tensions flare in court. In March, a male relative of Correa was arrested for attempting to speak to her during proceedings, shouting, “Love you, Anabell,” despite being warned to remain silent.

Community Response

A GoFundMe page set up by the Mooneys’ family described the impact of the crash: “Several families lost their children that day, and while some will recover, the void of the loss of Desiree and Max will be felt forever.” The fundraiser has raised more than $20,000 to help cover funeral costs.
