Coastal areas are always under pressure from erosion, and cities often need to step in to protect beaches and nearby communities. A new project in Isle of Palms aims to do exactly that by restoring large parts of its shoreline.
Beach Renourishment Project Approved
The City Council of Isle of Palms has awarded the construction contract to Marinex Construction for an upcoming beach renourishment project.
This project comes eight years after the last major effort in 2018 and focuses on repairing areas affected by erosion.
Project Details and Scope
Officials have planned a large-scale restoration covering nearly 19,200 feet of shoreline.
The work will include:
- Rebuilding multiple sections of the beach
- Adding millions of cubic yards of sand
- Covering both the north and south ends of the island
Two sections will be in the Wild Dunes area, while a larger portion will be restored on the southern side.
Sand and Construction Plan
The project will use approximately 2.5 million cubic yards of sand overall, with about 1.7 million cubic yards being handled directly by the contractor.
This process helps rebuild the beach, making it wider and stronger against waves and storms.
Project Cost and Funding
The total cost of the project came in lower than expected. While it was initially estimated at around $32 million, the final bids were significantly less.
Funding will come from:
- Around $9 million from the city’s Beach Preservation Fund
- About $2 million in grants
- Up to $12 million from the Wild Dunes Community Association
Some contractor bids were close to $26 million, while the lowest was just under $21.5 million.
When Work Will Begin
City officials are planning to begin construction in July, aiming to complete the work before further erosion impacts the shoreline.
