Brigham Young Merrell, 35, and his wife, Melinda Marie Merrell, 36, have been charged in the death of their 11-year-old son, Moroni Merrell, who was allegedly tortured and murdered in their home in Tremonton, Utah. Brigham faces charges of child abuse homicide and child torture, while Melinda faces one count of child torture.
The Fatal Incident
On September 21, 2025, authorities responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive child. Brigham Merrell reportedly told dispatchers that he had found his son hanging by a coaxial cable and was performing CPR. However, when officers arrived, Brigham was kneeling beside his son but not performing CPR.
Surveillance footage contradicted his account, showing that he carried the lifeless child past emergency responders and upstairs, where he allegedly staged the scene to make it appear as though the boy had hanged himself.
Investigation and Evidence
The investigation revealed that the child’s injuries were inconsistent with a hanging. Medical examiners found ligature marks on Moroni’s neck that suggested a different cause of death, and bruises on his back pointed to severe corporal punishment.
Witnesses, including surviving children, described a pattern of physical abuse in the home, including beatings with belts and other objects, intentional starvation, and forced outdoor confinement. One child claimed to have witnessed Moroni’s death after receiving a “whooping” from Brigham.
The couple’s surviving children provided accounts of years of abuse, with video evidence supporting their claims. Both parents admitted to the abuse during separate interviews with detectives. Brigham Merrell admitted to murdering his son, while Melinda Merrell acknowledged her participation in the beatings and described adjusting their punishment methods to avoid leaving marks.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
The surviving children have been placed in welfare care, and the Box Elder County Attorney’s Office is handling the prosecution. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to review additional digital evidence. The Merrells were booked into the Box Elder County Jail on May 7, 2026, following an eight-month investigation. The couple’s court appearance dates have not been confirmed.
