An 18-year-old man in Michigan is in custody after allegedly shooting and killing a 14-year-old boy and a 39-year-old mother of eight this week, following a dispute over a local pickup soccer game. The incident took place on Tuesday at Southwest Elementary School in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Shooting Incident at Local Park

According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, officers responded to a report of gunfire near Oakland Ave SW and Rumsey Street SW at approximately 6:40 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, they found two victims on the property of Southwest Elementary School.

The teenager, identified as Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman, identified as Savanah Villarreal, was rushed to a hospital where she later died from her injuries.

The violence reportedly occurred near the school’s playground, where a group of children and older juveniles had gathered to play soccer. Interim Police Chief Joe Trigg explained that the suspect had approached the group and asked to join the game. After being turned away, the suspect became upset, leading to a verbal altercation.

Trigg said the suspect then pulled out a firearm and shot the 14-year-old boy. When Villarreal, who was supervising the children, intervened to defend the teen, she was also targeted and shot.

Victim’s Family Remembers Her

Family members confirmed that Villarreal was a mother of eight who had stepped in to supervise the children because of previous verbal harassment during the games. Her sister, Angelita Tierrablanca, described her as “selfless” and said she loved children dearly.

The family also explained that the 14-year-old victim was a friend of Villarreal’s son, which made her particularly protective of him during the incident.

Community Reacts to Tragic Event

The shooting left a group of juveniles traumatized, as many of them witnessed the violent attack. The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with local residents expressing disbelief over the senseless violence.

Donny Irving, a local resident, commented, “You should be able to go to the park and play, and this is one of those senseless things that I have seen too many times.”

Ongoing Investigation

The 18-year-old suspect was taken into custody shortly after the shooting at a nearby residence. While formal charges have not yet been filed, he remains in custody on suspicion of murder. The investigation is ongoing, with detectives working to finalize the case for presentation to prosecutors.

In response to the tragic events, Grand Rapids Public Schools closed both Southwest Elementary and Southwest Middle High School to give students and staff time to process the tragedy. Authorities continue to investigate the shooting as the community mourns the loss of two lives.
