A Kentucky homicide suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting five months after allegedly murdering and dismembering an unhoused man.
Murder Allegations
Michael Hristov, 21, was indicted for murder, abuse of a corpse, and assault in connection with the Dec. 24, 2025, killing of Michael Howard in a Louisville homeless encampment. Howard was found nude with satanic symbols carved into his body, dismembered, and missing several toes and his genitals.
Background and Investigation
Authorities said Hristov had a history of law enforcement trouble, reportedly tortured animals, and expressed fascination with serial killers and mass shooters. Police linked Hristov to a Reddit post claiming to be a serial killer targeting unhoused people. Blood found in his backpack matched Howard’s DNA, and a severed toe image was discovered in his iCloud account.
Officer-Involved Shooting
On May 14, 2026, SWAT officers attempted to execute a warrant at Hristov’s home. He fired at officers and later told 911 dispatchers he wanted to be shot. After a 20-minute standoff, Hristov exited wearing a helmet and ballistic vest and refused to drop his weapon. He was shot once by Officer Beau Gadegaard.
Ongoing Investigation
The LMPD continues to investigate whether Hristov was involved in other attacks on homeless individuals in Louisville.
