A North Carolina man has been sentenced to prison nearly three years after a single punch during a late-night confrontation in Raleigh led to the death of 27-year-old David Millette Jr.

Fatal Altercation in Glenwood South

David Millette was celebrating with family and friends in Raleigh’s Glenwood South district in August 2023 when he was punched during an encounter outside local bars after closing time.

The punch caused Millette to fall and strike his head on the concrete. He suffered severe injuries and died six days later in the hospital.

Plea Deal Reached

Tyrell Moore, 27, was initially charged with murder but later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter as part of a plea agreement.

Under the deal, Moore will serve between three and five years in prison. Additional charges, including fleeing to avoid arrest, were dismissed.

Family Questions Sentence

Millette’s family attended the sentencing hearings and said they were shocked by the relatively short prison term for a case that resulted in a death.

They hope the case raises awareness about sentencing laws involving fatal one-punch incidents.

Remembering David Millette

Friends and family described Millette as a hardworking and caring person who spent years building a career in the restaurant industry.

He was preparing to become a father at the time of his death. His son, now 2 years old, will grow up knowing his father through family stories and memories.
