Two Charleston men have been arrested after investigators uncovered an alleged counterfeit check scheme involving Facebook Marketplace sales in Colleton County.
Suspects Arrested in UTV Scam Investigation
According to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-olds Jameco Khalil Hylant Harley and Corey Maurice Seabrook Jr. were arrested following an investigation into fraudulent purchases of utility terrain vehicles (UTVs).
The case began when a seller accepted a $25,000 cashier’s check for a UTV listed for $23,000 on Facebook Marketplace. The seller later discovered the check was counterfeit and reported the incident to authorities.
Undercover Operation Leads to Arrests
While investigating, deputies learned of another attempted UTV purchase involving similar circumstances and the same meeting location.
Detectives then arranged an undercover operation on May 29, posing as sellers during a planned transaction.
Authorities said the suspects presented another cashier’s check matching the counterfeit document used in the earlier incident. Deputies arrested both men after confirming the check was fraudulent.
Charges Filed
Harley and Seabrook have each been charged with obtaining goods under false pretenses and forgery.
Seabrook was granted a $120,000 surety bond and has been released. Harley was denied bond because he was already out on bond in another case involving violent crime charges.
Safety Reminder for Online Sellers
The sheriff’s office is urging residents to be cautious when buying or selling items online.
Authorities recommend meeting in public places, preferably near law enforcement facilities or areas with surveillance cameras, and verifying cashier’s checks with the issuing bank before completing a transaction.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed.
