Several people were killed in a mass shooting in Sandy, Oregon, on May 31, prompting a major police response and leaving the community in shock.
What Happened?
Police and Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a domestic disturbance and possible shooting near Evans Street at around 4 p.m. local time.
When officers arrived, a suspect exchanged gunfire with law enforcement, and one officer was shot multiple times. The injured officer was airlifted to a hospital and is expected to survive.
Suspect in Custody
Authorities identified the suspect as Bryan Moore, 38. According to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office, he was booked into jail on suspicion of murder and kidnapping.
Police said Moore surrendered peacefully and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Investigation Ongoing
Officials have not yet confirmed the total number of people killed or injured in the shooting. Detectives from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate the scene.
Community Reacts
Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey described the incident as a traumatic event for the community and asked residents to keep the victims, their families, and first responders in their thoughts.
Mayor Kathleen Walker called the shooting an act of domestic violence and said the tragedy has affected the entire community.
