A man in Dewsbury, England, has been sentenced to a minimum of 33 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of 21-year-old Courtney Angus.
Details of the Crime
Michael Doherty, 38, attacked Angus after she rejected his romantic advances. Police say he assaulted and strangled her at his home. An autopsy confirmed that Angus was also the victim of a serious s*xual assault.
Arrest and Police Confrontation
Doherty was arrested in July 2025 after threatening police officers with a knife while attempting to enter a nearby pub. Officers deployed a Taser to subdue him. Doherty told authorities that he had killed someone and that a body was in his house, leading to the discovery of Angus’ body.
Guilty Plea and Sentencing
Doherty pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced on May 28, 2026. Police noted that he had demonstrated willingness to use violence by threatening a shop worker and officers during the confrontation.
Family Statement
Angus’ family expressed their grief, saying:
“Courtney was such a loving and vibrant young woman with her whole life ahead of her. She was a huge part of this family, and she will never be replaced.”
They added that while they are relieved Doherty has been sentenced, their pain remains profound.
