A coyote surprised three women by walking into A Maker’s Post, a home goods store on Sullivan’s Island, on the afternoon of May 19. The encounter was captured on security cameras.
Mistaken for a Dog
The store’s front door was propped open for customers when Amanda Woodward, a sales representative, mistook the animal for a dog and greeted it. She quickly realized it was a coyote and screamed.
Chaos in the Store
The coyote ran toward the counter where Woodward, store manager Vaughn Connolly, and employee Ashlynn Moseley were gathered. The women ran to the back of the store, then outside, locking doors behind them. The coyote ended up on the countertop, knocking over a water bottle before settling in a large pot in the back.
Animal Captured
Wildlife trappers arrived about two hours later to collect the coyote, which was likely euthanized, as state law prohibits relocating trapped coyotes.
Coyotes on Sullivan’s Island
Coyotes are common in South Carolina but typically active at dawn and dusk. Sightings near people and businesses are unusual but not unheard of. Police reports indicate an uptick in encounters on Sullivan’s Island in 2026, including stalking incidents on beaches. Past notable encounters have also gone viral in nearby Mount Pleasant.
