NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Hunter Matthew Yancey has been charged with abuse to a child involving great bodily harm following an incident in early May in which a child suffered severe burns while taking a bath at a hotel on Rivers Avenue.
Incident Details
Yancey was originally taken into custody on May 15 and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child. On May 29, authorities added the more serious charge of abuse to a child involving great bodily harm.
According to reports, Yancey failed to check the temperature of the bathwater before placing the child in the tub. He stated that he slipped while trying to manage both the child and a cracked, flooded toilet, resulting in severe burns to the child’s legs.
Emergency Response
Responding officers found the child in significant pain and immediately called emergency medical services, which transported the child to a hospital for treatment. The child’s mother reported witnessing the incident via a video call and called EMS upon seeing the injuries.
Legal Proceedings
Yancey was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center, and the investigation remains ongoing.
