A South Carolina man was sentenced to 35 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting of a stranger.
Incident Details
Javar Deon Mitchell, now 22, was involved in the killing of 25-year-old Dontae Greene on July 19, 2021, in West Ashley. Mitchell and Jaquan Washington, then both 16, opened fire on Greene, who was playing dice with friends, mistakenly believing he was a member of a rival gang.
Trial and Conviction
Both men were transferred from juvenile court to adult court. A jury convicted Mitchell and Washington after a four-day trial in July 2025. Washington was sentenced to 40 years in January. Neither is eligible for parole.
Shooting Details
Mitchell and Washington fired about a dozen shots at Greene, hitting him in the head. Firearms analysis indicated two different guns were used, one of which was recovered after another arrest. The weapons were reportedly obtained through associates of the defendants or Greene.
