A Kentucky man has been found guilty but mentally ill in the murder of a woman at her Richmond mansion.
Conviction and Charges
Shannon Gilday, 27, was convicted of:
- Murder
- Burglary
- Attempted murder
The jury determined Gilday is legally responsible for his crimes, differing from a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity.
Details of the Crime
The killing occurred on February 22, 2022, at the home of 32-year-old attorney Jordan Morgan, daughter of a former state legislator. Gilday targeted the mansion’s “doomsday bunker,” which he believed contained valuable resources in the event of a nuclear attack.
Authorities reported that Gilday had conducted surveillance of the home and studied the family’s schedules. He used scaffolding to enter the property and fired more than 25 shots at Morgan, leaving her to bleed out. Law enforcement said she was awake during the attack.
Kentucky Assistant Attorney General Todd Willard noted that Gilday fired through doors because he feared Morgan would call 911.
Arrest and Aftermath
Gilday initially fled the scene but later returned and was arrested. Police pronounced Morgan dead at the home.
Sentencing
The jury is expected to deliberate on Gilday’s sentence on Tuesday.
