A Michigan man has been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his ex-girlfriend and hiding her body in his condo.
Conviction and Charges
Matthew Lewinski, 42, was found guilty of:
- First-degree murder
- Mutilation of a body
- Concealing a body
He faces life in prison, with sentencing scheduled for July 14.
Details of the Crime
The killing occurred in December 2020 in Lewinski’s Clinton Township condo. Courtney “Jerri” Winters, Lewinski’s former girlfriend, visited him after their breakup. During the visit, the two argued about her recent abortion.
According to prosecutors, Winters sat in an armchair while Lewinski prepared tea. A verbal argument escalated to a physical altercation, during which Lewinski strangled Winters until she was dead. He later moved her body to the basement.
Discovery of the Body
In July 2021, Lewinski’s sister entered the condo while he was hospitalized and discovered Winters’ decomposed remains in the basement. The body was nude, lying on its stomach, with some skin removed. Police found blood, bleach, a knife, and rubber gloves at the scene.
Confession and Trial
Lewinski confessed to police that Winters had “egged” him on. His defense argued he “snapped” due to intimate partner violence from Winters and the news of her abortion.
Prosecutors countered by highlighting Lewinski’s own troubled family history, evidence of premeditation, and control over the situation, noting the strangulation took several minutes of conscious effort.
Outcome
Lewinski was convicted on all charges and now faces life imprisonment. His sentencing hearing is set for July 14, 2026.
