A Florida man has admitted to killing a father who intervened to protect his 1-year-old son during a shooting in Miami.
The Shooting
On August 2021, Dustin Wakefield, 21, stood between his son and gunman Tamarius Davis, 27, after Davis allegedly pointed a pistol at the boy and said, “it’s time to die.” Davis, who was 22 at the time, fired multiple times, striking Wakefield at least once in the head. Witnesses confirmed Davis as the shooter.
Heroism and Aftermath
Wakefield’s mother, Lora Wakefield, said her son “decidedly chose to lay his life down and protect people,” calling him a hero to his family and others nearby. The attack reportedly occurred while Wakefield and his family were at a sidewalk cafe on Ocean Drive.
Guilty Plea and Sentencing
Davis pleaded guilty last week to second-degree murder. Court documents indicate he was under the influence of mushrooms at the time and said he “randomly chose” the Wakefield family. His sentencing date has not yet been set.
